JOURNEY

Days: 7 Days | Group: 6 - 12

The Talkeetna Mountains are one of Alaska’s most spectacular and overlooked wildernesses

— and one of the most accessible ways to experience truly remote Alaska.

Jagged ridgelines rise above turquoise lakes, glaciers spill from hidden valleys, and endless tundra stretches toward the horizon. We’ll fly deep into the mountains by bush plane, then spend the week hiking our way back to the road — crossing high passes, wandering broad alpine valleys, and camping wherever the evening finds us. One bush flight, no return pickup, and a whole lot of wilderness make this a simpler, more accessible adventure without sacrificing the wildness.

Over 7 days…

We’ll traverse ridgelines, climb small peaks, watch for wildlife, eat well, and soak up some truly ridiculous views. With an epic bush flight into the mountains and a week spent hiking our way back to the road, this trip packs a whole lot of Alaska into one adventure. Expect true remoteness, off-trail travel, big terrain, and plenty of challenge — but if you’re up for it, the Talkeetnas will blow your mind.

MOMENT BY MOMENT, DAY BY DAY

DAY 1

DAY 1

WELCOME TO TALKEETNA

one of the coolest towns in all of Alaska. This place has history. For decades it’s been the mountaineering hub of Alaska. Pretty much every mountaineering expedition for Denali or the Alaska Range starts here. Wherever you look you’ll see people with excited / nervous anticipation on their faces as they wait to fly into the range to start their climb.

You can get here from Anchorage by car, bus, or train. Any way about it we recommend you arrive a day early so you have some time to see the town and eat the Roadhouse cinnamon rolls. We’ll meet in the morning, get packed and sorted, take a break for lunch and then, weather-permitting, fly into the Talkeetnas by float plane or helicopter. If the weather is unflyable, we may opt to hike into the mountains from the road.

DAY 2

Coffee tastes pretty damn good when you wake up in the middle of the Talkeetna Mountains. After breakfast, we’ll break camp, shoulder our packs, and point ourselves toward a road that’s still nearly a week away.

The first day on foot is about finding our rhythm. There are no trails out here, so we’ll pick our own way across open tundra, through creek bottoms, around patches of brush, and toward whatever pass or ridgeline comes next. We’ll learn how to move efficiently through Alaska’s wonderfully imperfect terrain and settle into the simple routine of life on foot. By evening, the plane will be long gone, the road will still be far away, and we’ll be properly out there.

DAY 3 - 6

DAY 3 - 6

By now, we’ll be properly in the rhythm of it. Each morning we’ll shoulder our packs and keep working our way across the Talkeetnas — following broad valleys, crossing high passes, wandering ridgelines, and climbing the occasional summit just because it’s there.

We’ll watch for moose and bears, eat big well-earned dinners and laugh around camp. There are no trails and no prescribed route through these mountains. We’ll read the terrain as we go, choosing the best way forward and slowly watching the miles between us and the road disappear.

DAY 7

DAY 7

THIS MOMENT IS ALWAYS BITTERSWEET.

We’ll wake for one last morning in the mountains — ready for a shower and a real meal, but not quite ready to leave this slower world behind. After breakfast, we’ll shoulder our packs for the final miles and walk all the way back to the road.

From there, we’ll return to Talkeetna, clean up, and head into town for a celebratory dinner. One week, one bush flight, and one wild line across the Talkeetnas — done.

The Alaska Factor

Any expedition in Alaska requires flexibility, patience, and a big sense of adventure. We always try our best to follow our itineraries as written, but rarely do. That’s part of the fun of it! Alaska weather is always changing and shifting and we will always respectfully honor what the weather allows or doesn’t allow us to do. We get the incredible luxury of flying into these beautiful places, but with flying also comes a need to defer to the conditions.  Sometimes flights may be delayed for a day or more as we wait for an appropriate weather window. Trip itineraries may also shift due to group skill, pilot availability, or any number of unforeseen circumstances. Please come with an open mind, a spirit of enthusiastic adventure, and a willingness to see where the trip takes you.

 WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

I’ve hired a lot of guides over the last two decades and by far Jack is the best. My time in Alaska with him was phenomenal. He’s funny, humble, thoughtful and kept us safe on our remote trip. The views of Denali totally rocked my world. From the very flight in I was dumbfounded.
— Sam J.
No words. Wow. I will remember this trip for the rest of my life. The food and the company were great. The views of the mountains and flying in low over the glacier was soooo cool. Just being out there I was always in awe.
— Laura R.
I honestly still tear up a bit remembering how beautiful it was out there. Those mountains are so massive. Denali is the real deal. I’d backpacked a lot before in the lower 48, but never in mountains like that! I’m glad I had a guide! Jack is hilarious and incredible at what he does.
— April S.
