JOURNEY

Days: 8 or 12 | Group: 5 - 7

Minimum Age: 16

Prince William Sound is a paradise. Singing whales, calving glaciers, snow capped high summits and endless twilight.

We’ll travel by sailboat, moving quietly through glacier-carved waters and anchoring in secluded bays. Each day offers the chance to step ashore and hike into wild, rarely visited landscapes—old-growth forests, alpine meadows, and rocky ridgelines with wide views of the Sound. Expect long summer days, wildlife sightings, and the simple rhythm of life at sea and on foot. This trip is for those who want to experience Alaska up close, with time to explore, breathe, and move at the pace of the land.

Hiking above prince william sound

Over 8 days..

We’ll sail quiet fjords, anchor in hidden coves, hike to glacier overlooks, spot whales and sea otters, eat well, laugh a ton, get a little salty, learn a lot, and experience a side of Alaska most visitors never do. Most trips like this don’t make it past the popular day-cruise routes, but Prince William Sound is huge and packed with places few people ever set foot. Towering peaks, tidewater glaciers, remote beaches—it’s a dream for those who like to explore.

And you get to do it all from the comfort of a beautiful sail boat, a warm bed, and home-cooked meals. This is Alaska in comfy style.

MOMENT BY MOMENT, DAY BY DAY

DAY 1

DAY 1

WELCOME TO WHITTIER OR VALDEZ

where the mountains and oceans meet and (this time of year) the sun never sets.

Depending on the year and where our sailboat is based you’ll either head from Anchorage by plane to Valdez or by train to Whittier. There you’ll meet your guide for dinner and gear prep and an overview of the trip.

DAY 2
Sailboat on the ocean

DAY 2

In the morning, we’ll start with a laid-back, hearty breakfast—hot coffee, fresh fruit, something warm to fuel up for the day ahead. Then we’ll head down to the dock to meet the captain and get familiar with our sailboat, which will be home for the coming days. After a quick safety briefing and orientation, we’ll cast off lines and sail out into the quiet waters of Prince William Sound. Towering mountains and dense spruce forests will rise straight from the sea as we leave the harbor behind and start weaving through the fjords and islands, with the wind filling the sails and the adventure officially underway.

DAY 3 - 7

DAY 3 - 7

We’ll spend the next five days sailing through glacier-carved fjords, hiking to remote viewpoints, exploring hidden beaches, spotting whales, sea otters, and maybe even bears along the shoreline (from a safe distance). The long northern summer light will cast an evening glow over the mountains and ice, creating moments you won’t forget. Evenings are for anchoring in quiet coves, sharing good meals, swapping stories, and enjoying the kind of deep connection that only time in wild places can bring. These trips are a lot of fun. Sometimes people bring goofy costumes, there might be a spontaneous talent show, and there are always plenty of games—though everything is 100% optional :)

DAY 8

DAY 8

This morning will be our last out on the water. We’ll wake to the gentle rocking of the boat, maybe with eagles calling from the shoreline or seals bobbing nearby. There’ll be time for a slow breakfast, a warm drink, and a quiet moment to take in the stillness of the Sound one last time. As we sail back toward civilization, the towering peaks and wild coastline will gradually give way to signs of the harbor. We’ll dock back in either Whittier or Valdez, where we’ll say our goodbyes and step back onto solid ground—hopefully carrying the calm, connection, and stories of the journey with us.

The Alaska Factor

Any expedition in Alaska requires flexibility, patience, and a big sense of adventure. We always try our best to follow our itineraries as written, but rarely do. That’s part of the fun of it! Alaska weather is always changing and shifting and we will always respectfully honor what the weather allows or doesn’t allow us to do. We get the incredible luxury of flying into these beautiful places, but with flying also comes a need to defer to the conditions.  Sometimes flights may be delayed for a day or more as we wait for an appropriate weather window. Trip itineraries may also shift due to group skill, pilot availability, or any number of unforeseen circumstances. Please come with an open mind, a spirit of enthusiastic adventure, and a willingness to see where the trip takes you.

 WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

I have travelled the entire world, every continent, with dozens of high-end guide services and this was hands down the best trip of my life. The place worked it’s way into my soul. And Jack was the best guide i’ve ever had! It was hard, but so so worth it.
— Jona R.
I recommend this trip to all my friends. Hands down the greatest wilderness experience of my life! Oh and the food was beyond awesome!
— Aer P.
It’s impossible to explain how vast the place is. Every square mile would be it’s own national park if it were in the lower 48! I’m so grateful I got the chance to go here and so glad I chose IAG to go with.

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Check out the FAQ’s below, or text or call us at 845-661-3008 to talk it through! Or send us an email. We love hearing from folks.

  • Hiking in coastal Alaska has its own set of challenges! We’ll be hiking 3–6 miles per day, often on uneven terrain—think rocky beaches, steep forest, and sometimes slippery moss or tidal flats. If you’ve done some hiking and prepare physically, you’ll do great. Experienced hikers will still find plenty to love and push their limits. Guests will be expected to take care of their personal gear, pack and unpack their bags, and help carry a portion of shared items when we go ashore. The effort is more than worth it: you’ll be moving through wild, remote landscapes few others ever reach, with the satisfaction of having earned every view and experience.

  • The price includes all accommodations aboard the sailboat during the trip, all sailing and shore transportation within the Sound, breakfasts and dinners on board, all group supplies—cooking equipment, water filtration, group safety gear, emergency communication devices, maps, GPS, first aid kit, and the support of your experienced and trained guides.

  • The price does not include travel to Anchorage or Whittier/Valdez (depending on trip start), transportation to the harbor at the start and end, travel insurance or rescue insurance (both strongly recommended), or gratuity for your guides (10–20% of trip cost is customary). Personal gear is not included—things like hiking boots, layers, rain gear, day pack, headlamp, and toiletries. The price also does not include the cost of lunches / snacks. On our trips lunches are really just extended snacking throughout the day.

  • The boat has space for 5 guests, 1 guide, and 1 captain.

  • Meals on board are simple, hearty, and surprisingly good. Our captain knows their way around a galley and cooks up satisfying meals each day, often featuring fresh-caught salmon if we’re lucky. Expect a mix of comfort food and fresh ingredients, perfect after a full day of exploring. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions. We’ll provide all breakfasts and dinners, and the occasional treat. Guests are asked to bring their own lunch snacks. On these trips, lunch is more of a “snack as you go” style to keep the day flowing and maximize time out in the wild.

  • Fly into Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage. Then either fly to Valdez or train to Whittier (details will be sent out upon booking).

  • We have people come on our trips by themselves all the time! There’s nothing like travel through remote wilderness to build community.

  • Indigo Alpine Guide trips are most often run by the owner Jack Bynum and his closest and most trusted friends. All the people who work for IAG have over a decade of experience guiding trips in the most remote places on earth, have wilderness medical training and advanced guiding certifications.

For the Advanced Backpacking Course, Instructors will be women or queer respectively.

  • Deposit (non-refundable)

    • $1,000–$2,000 per person, depending on the trip.

    • Required to confirm your booking.

    • The deposit is refundable if you cancel within 72 hours of booking. After that, they are non-refundable.

    Final payment due:

    • 90 days prior to trip start date.

    Cancellation by client:

    • >90 days before trip: Refund of all payments minus deposit.

    • 61–90 days before trip: 50% refund of total trip cost.

    • 60 days or fewer before trip: No refund.

    • Replacement option: If you are able to fill your spot by finding a new guest, 100% refund (minus deposit).

    Cancellation by Indigo Alpine Guides:

    • Full refund of all payments including deposit, but we are not responsible for any additional expenses incurred (flights, hotels, etc.). We recommend booking refundable airfare when possible.

    Trip delays / itinerary changes:

    • No refunds for weather delays, itinerary changes, or other factors outside our control.

    Travel insurance:

    • Strongly recommended to protect your trip investment.

  • We always encourage folks to purchase trip cancelation insurance in addition to the mandatory medical evacuation insurance. We require that you have at least $200,000 in medical evacuation insurance. Your insurance policy should cover hazardous sports and we recommend that your policy cover search and rescue. Since we cannot confirm each client’s policy individually, it is your responsibility to make sure your policy will cover you while you participate in your activities of choice on the expedition.

For US citizens, we recommend Global Rescue. You will have a choice of purchasing it with or without the cancellation coverage–so make sure to select the one that gives you the coverage that you need. Other commonly used companies include World Nomads and Squaremouth.

You are welcome to seek out other insurance options, as these are only recommendations. When selecting a policy, please make sure they insure all the activities you’ll be participating in (many don’t include roped climbing, skiing, mountaineering, etc).
